    We report some existing work, inspired by analogies between human thought and machine computation, showing that the informational state of a digital computer can be decoded in a similar way to brain decoding. We then discuss some proposed work that would leverage this analogy to shed light on the amount of information that may be missed by the technical limitations of current neuroimaging technologies.

    Authors: Jia, Ke;

    Learning and experience are critical for translating ambiguous sensory information from our environments to perceptual decisions. Yet, evidence on how training molds the adult human brain remains controversial, as fMRI at standard resolution does not allow us to discern the finer-scale mechanisms that underlie sensory plasticity. Here, we combine ultra-high field (7T) functional imaging at sub-millimetre resolution with orientation discrimination training to interrogate experience-dependent plasticity across cortical depths that are known to support dissociable brain computations. Our results provide evidence for recurrent plasticity, by contrast to sensory encoding vs. feedback mechanisms. We demonstrate that learning alters orientation-specific representations in superficial rather than middle V1 layers, suggesting changes in read-out rather than input signals. Further, learning increases feedforward rather than feedback layer-to-layer connectivity in occipito-parietal regions, suggesting that sensory plasticity gates perceptual decisions. Our findings reveal finer-scale plasticity mechanisms that re-weight sensory signals to inform improved decisions, bridging the gap between micro- and macro- circuits of experience-dependent plasticity. $$ \ $$ See the file 'Description of uploaded data' for a detailed description of the dataset.

    Background: Depressed mood has been associated with decreased white matter and reduced hippocampal volumes. However, the relationship between brain structure and mood may be unique among adolescents who use marijuana heavily. The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between white matter and hippocampal volumes and depressive symptoms among adolescent marijuana users and controls. Methods: Data were collected from marijuana users (n = 16) and demographically similar controls (n = 16) aged 16-18. Extensive exclusionary criteria included psychiatric and neurologic disorders, including major depression. Substance use, mood, and anatomical measures were collected after 28 days of monitored abstinence. Results: Marijuana (MJ) users demonstrated more depressive symptoms than controls (p < .05). MJ use (beta = .42, p < .005) and smaller white matter volume (beta = -.34, p < .03) each predicted higher levels of depressive symptoms on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. MJ use interacted with white matter volume (beta = -.55, p < .03) in predicting depression scores on the Beck Depression Inventory: among MJ users, but not controls, white matter volume was negatively associated with depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Marijuana use and white matter volume were additive and interactive in predicting depressive symptoms among adolescents. Subtle neurodevelopmental white matter abnormalities may disrupt the connections between areas involved in mood regulation.

    Authors: Andersson, Louise;

    This thesis combines phenomenological and neuroscientific research to elucidate the effects of psychedelic agents on the human brain, mind and psychological well-being. Psychoactive plants have been used for thousands of years for ceremonial and ritual purposes. Psychedelics are psychoactive substances that affect cognitive processes and alter perception, thoughts, and mood. Illegalization of psychedelics in the 1960s rendered them impossible to study empirically but in the last couple of decades, relaxed legal restrictions regarding research purposes, renewed interest in the effects of psychedelic drugs and new brain imaging techniques have started to reveal the possibilities of these mind-altering substances. Psychedelics mainly affect the serotonin receptor 5-HT2A which in turn affect the functioning of largescale cortical areas by changing cerebral blood flow, alpha oscillations, and functional connectivity. These cortical changes not only induce immediate alterations in perception and cognition but have been shown to have positive effects in therapeutic interventions for depression, anxiety, and addiction, and also positively affect well-being in general. Although the pharmacology and neurobiology of psychedelics are still poorly understood, the potential benefits justify empirical research on psychedelics in humans.

    Authors: Ellis, Sam; Reader, Andrew J;

    This dataset contains the data used to produce the paper: 'Simultaneous maximum a posteriori longitudinal PET image reconstruction' by Ellis and Reader, Physics in Medicine and Biology (2017). DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/1361-6560/aa7b49. Please see the article for a full description of methodology used to obtain this data.  The dataset comprises a number of MATLAB data files (.mat), MATLAB scripts (.m), and plain text files (.txt), corresponding to each figure in the article. Running the .m script in MATLAB for each figure will reproduce that figure approximately as it appears in the article. Furthermore, the .txt files describe the contents of the .mat data files in order to allow independent exploration of the data. Note that the function plotSparseMarker is required to be able to run fig5.m. This work was funded by the King’s College London & Imperial College London EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Medical Imaging (grant number EP/L015226/1) and supported by the EPSRC grant number EP/M020142/1. This data has been made available in accordance with the EPSRC's policy framework on research data.

    Averaged T1-weighted MPRAGE with an isotropic resolution of 250 µmThis folder contains structural data of a single young healthy Caucasian subject in NIfTI file format. This dataset has been build by registering eight single T1-weighted MPRAGE volumes with a native isotropic resolution of 250 µm and the average to increase the SNR.MPRAGE_250um.tarAll averages of T1-weighted MPRAGE with an isotropic resolution of 250 µmThis folder contains all prior averages of the registration process to build the final T1-weighted MPRAGE volume with an isotropic resolution of 250 µm.averages.tarPre-Processed T1-weighted MPRAGE volumesThis folder contains all eight single pre-processed T1-weighted MPRAGE volumes used to generate the average with an isotropic resolution of 250 µm. Additionally, 1 and 0.5 mm pre-processed data of the same subject are included in the folder. Pre-processing consists of AC-PC alignment and bias field correction. Details can be found in the readme.derivatives.tarSourcedata of T1-weighted MPRAGE volumesThis folder contains all eight single unprocessed T1-weighted MPRAGE volumes used to generate the average with an isotropic resolution of 250 µm. Additionally, 1 and 0.5 mm unprocessed data of the same subject and motion tracking information of all acquisitions is included in the archive.sourcedata.tar We present an ultrahigh resolution in vivo human brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) dataset. It consists of T1-weighted whole brain anatomical data acquired at 7 Tesla with a nominal isotropic resolution of 250 μm of a single young healthy Caucasian subject and was recorded using prospective motion correction. The raw data amounts to approximately 1.2 TB and was acquired in eight hours total scan time. The resolution of this dataset is far beyond any previously published in vivo structural whole brain dataset. Its potential use is to build an in vivo MR brain atlas. Methods for image reconstruction and image restoration can be improved as the raw data is made available. Pre-processing and segmentation procedures can possibly be enhanced for high magnetic field strength and ultrahigh resolution data. Furthermore, potential resolution induced changes in quantitative data analysis can be assessed, e.g., cortical thickness or volumetric measures, as high quality images with an isotropic resolution of 1 and 0.5 mm of the same subject are included in the repository as well.

    Authors: Jia, Ke;
