However, there was some inconsistency in the results obtained for altered regions of WM. The aim of this study was to investigate fractional anisotropy (FA) in the WM of the whole brain in patients with OCD by using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).Methods: In total, 28 unmedicated patients with OCD and 28 healthy volunteers underwent DTI scan. A voxel-based analysis was used to compare FA values in WM of the two groups at a voxel threshold of P<0.005 with an extent threshold of k>72 voxels (P<0.05; Alphasim correction). Subsequently, correlation analysis was conducted in order to find the correlation between the mean FA values in significantly altered brain regions and Yale–Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) scores of the OCD patients.Results: Compared with healthy volunteers, the OCD patients had lower FA value in the left lingual gyrus, right midbrain, and right precuneus. There were no regions with significantly higher FA values in OCD patients compared with healthy volunteers. The mean FA values in the above regions (left lingual, r=0.019, P=0.923; right midbrain, r=-0.208, P=0.289; and right precuneus, r=-0.273, P=0.161) had no significant correlation with the Y-BOCS scores of the OCD patients.Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that alterations in WM of the left lingual gyrus, right midbrain, and right precuneus are associated with the pathophysiology mechanism of OCD, and these microstructural alterations do not correlate with symptom severity of OCD.     Type 2 diabetes has been linked to cognitive impairment, but its potential metabolic mechanism is still unclear. The present study aimed to explore neuron–astrocyte metabolic cooperation in the brain of diabetic ( db/db, BKS.Cg-m+/+ Leprdb/J) mice with cognitive decline using 13C NMR technique in combination with intravenous [2-13C]-acetate and [3-13C]-lactate infusions. We found that the 13C-enrichment from [2-13C]-acetate into tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediate, succinate, was significantly decreased in db/db mice with cognitive decline compared with wild-type (WT, C57BLKS/J) mice, while an opposite result was obtained after [3-13C]-lactate infusion. Relative to WT mice, db/db mice with cognitive decline had significantly lower 13C labeling percentages in neurotransmitters including glutamine, glutamate, and γ-aminobutyric acid after [2-13C]-acetate infusion. However, [3-13C]-lactate resulted in increased 13C-enrichments in neurotransmitters in db/db mice with cognitive decline. This may indicate that the disturbance of neurotransmitter metabolism occurred during the development of cognitive decline. In addition, a reduction in 13C-labeling of lactate and an increase in gluconeogenesis were found from both labeled infusions in db/db mice with cognitive decline. Therefore, our results suggest that the development of cognitive decline in type 2 diabetes may be implicated to an unbalanced metabolism in neuron–astrocyte cooperation and an enhancement of gluconeogenesis.

    Our purpose is to evaluate the microstructural and metabolism property in the white matter that later become white matter hyperintensity (WMH), and of WMH that later disappeared. Forty subjects with two-year follow-up were included. Each subject had 3DT1, T2FLAIR, DTI and FDG-PET scans. White matter was classified into: constant WMH, growing WMH, shrinking WMH and normal appearing white matter (NAWM). The average DTI (FA and MD) and FDG-PET (standardized FDG-PET rSUV) of each of the above-mentioned region were extracted and compared. At baseline, the growing WMH had lower FA and FDG-PET rSUV than NAWM, but had higher FA than the constant WMH. Longitudinally, in NAWM, there was a more rapid decline in metabolism compared to WMH areas, while in the growing WMH, a progression in diffusion was found. Finally, we discovered that the shrinking WMH had a similar microstructural and metabolism property and progression to the constant WMH. Our results suggest there are dynamic changes in microstructural and metabolism in WMH. The metabolic change was mainly found in NAWM, while the microstructural change was mainly found in WMH region. Besides, the reduced volume in WMH, to a larger extent, is irrelevant to the microstructural or metabolism recovery.

    Neuropsychological and functional MRI data suggest that two functionally and anatomically dissociable streams of visual processing exist: a ventral perception-related stream and a dorsal action-related stream. However, relatively little is known about how the two streams interact in the intact brain during the production of adaptive behavior. Using functional MRI and a virtual three-dimensional paradigm, we aimed at examining whether the parieto-occipital junction (POJ) acts as an interface for the integration and processing of information between the dorsal and ventral streams in the near and far space processing. Virtual reality three-dimensional near and far space was defined by manipulating binocular disparity, with -68.76 arcmin crossed disparity for near space and +68.76 arcmin uncrossed disparity for near space. Our results showed that the POJ and bilateral superior occipital gyrus (SOG) showed relative increased activity when responded to targets presented in the near space than in the far space, which was independent of the retinotopic and perceived sizes of target. Furthermore, the POJ showed the enhanced functional connectivity with both the dorsal and ventral streams during the far space processing irrespective of target sizes, supporting that the POJ acts as an interface between the dorsal and ventral streams in disparity-defined near and far space processing. In contrast, the bilateral SOG showed the enhanced functional connectivity only with the ventral stream if retinotopic sizes of targets in the near and far spaces were matched, which suggested there was a functional dissociation between the POJ and bilateral SOG.

    Due to the lack of electroencephalography (EEG) data, it is hard to build an emotion recognition model with high accuracy from EEG signals using machine learning approach. Inspired by generative adversarial networks (GANs), we introduce a Conditional Wasserstein GAN (CWGAN) framework for EEG data augmentation to enhance EEG-based emotion recognition. A Wasserstein GAN with gradient penalty is adopted to generate realistic-like EEG data in differential entropy (DE) form. Three indicators are used to judge the qualities of the generated high-dimensional EEG data, and only high quality data are appended to supplement the data manifold, which leads to better classification of different emotions. We evaluate the proposed CWGAN framework on two public EEG datasets for emotion recognition, namely SEED and DEAP. The experimental results demonstrate that using the EEG data generated by CWGAN significantly improves the accuracies of emotion recognition models.

    Recently, pervasive sensing technologies have been widely applied to comprehensive patient monitoring in order to improve clinical treatment. Various types of biomedical signals collected by different sensing channels provide different aspects of patient health information. However, due to the uncertainty and variability in clinical observation, not all the channels are relevant and important to the target task. Thus, in order to extract informative representations from multi-channel biosignals, channel awareness has become a key enabler for deep learning in biosignal processing and has attracted increasing research interest in health informatics. Towards this end, we propose FusionAtt—a deep fusional attention network that can learn channel-aware representations of multi-channel biosignals, while preserving complex correlations among all the channels. FusionAtt is able to dynamically quantify the importance of each biomedical channel, and relies on more informative ones to enhance feature representation in an end-to-end manner. We empirically evaluated FusionAtt in two clinical tasks: multi-channel seizure detection and multivariate sleep stage classification. Experimental results showed that FusionAtt consistently outperformed the state-of-the-art models in four different evaluation measurements, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed fusional attention mechanism.

    This work was designed to investigate the effects of the combination therapy with intranasal (IN) administration of nerve growth factor (NGF) and electroacupuncture (EA) on neural progenitors and neurological functional recovery in adult rats after focal ischemia.Rats subjected to 2 hours of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) were randomly assigned to four groups: Group 1, IN administration of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for control; Group 2, IN administration of NGF alone; Group 3, EA with IN administration of PBS; Group 4, IN administration of NGF with EA. Treatments were initiated at 2 hours after MCAO and continued for three consecutive days. All animals received daily injections of 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) intraperitoneally for 7 days starting at 24 hours after reperfusion and were killed at 2 hours or 21 days after the last BrdU injection. Neurological function and infarct volume were evaluated. Immunohistochemistry for BrdU was performed to identify newborn cells in the ipsilateral subventricular zone and striatum.The combination treatment led to significant improvement in neurological function and reduction in infarct volume. Cell proliferation and survival of progenitors were enhanced in rats treated with the combination treatment.These results suggest that IN administration of NGF and EA may have a synergistic effect in preventing ischemic injury and enhancing functional recovery after focal cerebral ischemia, which may be attributed to enhanced cell proliferation and survival.

    Observational studies suggested an association of the Presenilin-1 (PSEN1) genotype with neuroimaging markers within Alzheimer's disease. However, whether the PSEN1 genotype and neuroimaging markers is a harbinger of Alzheimer's disease remains controversial. We aimed to examine the association of the PSEN1 mutation with neuroimaging markers in Alzheimer's disease: hippocampal volume, cerebral metabolism and brain amyloid deposition. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of 13 studies identified in Pubmed and Medline from 1997 to 2019 (n = 164). The pooled standard mean difference (SMD) was used to evaluate the association between the PSEN1 mutation and hippocampal volume and cerebral metabolism rate for glucose (CMRgl). A meta-analysis was also performed regarding the amyloid deposition between the PSEN1+ and PSEN1- groups. In order to accurately study whether PSEN1 independently was associated with changes in related image markers, sub-meta analyses was performed. The PSEN1 mutation was associated with a smaller hippocampal volume (pooled SMD: -3.3; 95 % CI: -5.36 to -1.24; p = 0.002) and decreased cerebral metabolism (pooled SMD: -1.73; 95 % CI: -2.7 to -0.76; p 0.0001). Additionally, PSEN1 was associated with increased cerebral amyloid deposition as detected by a positron emission tomography tracer (pooled SMD: 4.58; 95 % CI: 1.37-7.8; p = 0.0005). PSEN1 was associated with a decreased hippocampal volume in MRI markers, cerebral glucose hypometabolism, and increased cerebral amyloid deposition. These associations may indicate the potential role of neuroimaging markers for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

    Objective.Estimation of mental workload (MWL) levels by electroencephalography (EEG)-based mental state monitoring systems has been widely explored. Using event-related potentials (ERPs), elicited by ignored auditory probes, minimizes intrusiveness and has shown high performance for estimating MWL level when tested in laboratory situations. However, when facing real-world applications, the characteristics of ERP waveforms, like latency and amplitude, are often affected by noise, which leads to a decrease in classification performance. One approach to mitigating this is using spatial covariance, which is less sensitive to latency and amplitude distortion. In this study, we used ignored auditory probes in a single-stimulus paradigm and tested Riemannian processed covariance-based features for MWL level estimation in a realistic flight-control task.Approach.We recorded EEG data with an eight-channel system from participants while they performed a simulated drone-control task and manipulated MWL levels (high and low) by task difficulty. We compared support vector machine classification performance based on frequency band power features versus features generated via the Riemannian log map operator from spatial covariance matrices. We also compared accuracy of using data segmented as auditory ERPs versus non-ERPs, for which data windows did not overlap with the ERPs.Main results.Classification accuracy of both types of features showed no significant difference between ERPs and non-ERPs. When we ignore auditory stimuli to perform continuous decoding, covariance-based features in the gamma band had area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.883, which was significantly higher than band power features (AUC = 0.749).Significance.This study demonstrates that Riemannian-processed covariance features are viable for MWL classification under a realistic experimental scenario.

However, there was some inconsistency in the results obtained for altered regions of WM. The aim of this study was to investigate fractional anisotropy (FA) in the WM of the whole brain in patients with OCD by using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).Methods: In total, 28 unmedicated patients with OCD and 28 healthy volunteers underwent DTI scan. A voxel-based analysis was used to compare FA values in WM of the two groups at a voxel threshold of P<0.005 with an extent threshold of k>72 voxels (P<0.05; Alphasim correction). Subsequently, correlation analysis was conducted in order to find the correlation between the mean FA values in significantly altered brain regions and Yale–Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) scores of the OCD patients.Results: Compared with healthy volunteers, the OCD patients had lower FA value in the left lingual gyrus, right midbrain, and right precuneus. There were no regions with significantly higher FA values in OCD patients compared with healthy volunteers. The mean FA values in the above regions (left lingual, r=0.019, P=0.923; right midbrain, r=-0.208, P=0.289; and right precuneus, r=-0.273, P=0.161) had no significant correlation with the Y-BOCS scores of the OCD patients.Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that alterations in WM of the left lingual gyrus, right midbrain, and right precuneus are associated with the pathophysiology mechanism of OCD, and these microstructural alterations do not correlate with symptom severity of OCD.     Type 2 diabetes has been linked to cognitive impairment, but its potential metabolic mechanism is still unclear. The present study aimed to explore neuron–astrocyte metabolic cooperation in the brain of diabetic ( db/db, BKS.Cg-m+/+ Leprdb/J) mice with cognitive decline using 13C NMR technique in combination with intravenous [2-13C]-acetate and [3-13C]-lactate infusions. We found that the 13C-enrichment from [2-13C]-acetate into tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediate, succinate, was significantly decreased in db/db mice with cognitive decline compared with wild-type (WT, C57BLKS/J) mice, while an opposite result was obtained after [3-13C]-lactate infusion. Relative to WT mice, db/db mice with cognitive decline had significantly lower 13C labeling percentages in neurotransmitters including glutamine, glutamate, and γ-aminobutyric acid after [2-13C]-acetate infusion. However, [3-13C]-lactate resulted in increased 13C-enrichments in neurotransmitters in db/db mice with cognitive decline. This may indicate that the disturbance of neurotransmitter metabolism occurred during the development of cognitive decline. In addition, a reduction in 13C-labeling of lactate and an increase in gluconeogenesis were found from both labeled infusions in db/db mice with cognitive decline. Therefore, our results suggest that the development of cognitive decline in type 2 diabetes may be implicated to an unbalanced metabolism in neuron–astrocyte cooperation and an enhancement of gluconeogenesis.

    Our purpose is to evaluate the microstructural and metabolism property in the white matter that later become white matter hyperintensity (WMH), and of WMH that later disappeared. Forty subjects with two-year follow-up were included. Each subject had 3DT1, T2FLAIR, DTI and FDG-PET scans. White matter was classified into: constant WMH, growing WMH, shrinking WMH and normal appearing white matter (NAWM). The average DTI (FA and MD) and FDG-PET (standardized FDG-PET rSUV) of each of the above-mentioned region were extracted and compared. At baseline, the growing WMH had lower FA and FDG-PET rSUV than NAWM, but had higher FA than the constant WMH. Longitudinally, in NAWM, there was a more rapid decline in metabolism compared to WMH areas, while in the growing WMH, a progression in diffusion was found. Finally, we discovered that the shrinking WMH had a similar microstructural and metabolism property and progression to the constant WMH. Our results suggest there are dynamic changes in microstructural and metabolism in WMH. The metabolic change was mainly found in NAWM, while the microstructural change was mainly found in WMH region. Besides, the reduced volume in WMH, to a larger extent, is irrelevant to the microstructural or metabolism recovery.
