    Background Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were used to investigate training-related changes in fast visual word recognition of functionally illiterate adults. Analyses focused on the left-lateralized occipito-temporal N170, which represents the earliest processing of visual word forms. Event-related brain potentials were recorded from 20 functional illiterates receiving intensive literacy training for adults, 10 functional illiterates not participating in the training and 14 regular readers while they read words, pseudowords or viewed symbol strings. Subjects were required to press a button whenever a stimulus was immediately repeated. Results Attending intensive literacy training was associated with improvements in reading and writing skills and with an increase of the word-related N170 amplitude. For untrained functional illiterates and regular readers no changes in literacy skills or N170 amplitude were observed. Conclusions Results of the present study suggest that the word-related N170 can still be modulated in adulthood as a result of the improvements in literacy skills.

    Dissociations of nouns and verbs following brain damage have been interpreted as evidence for distinct neural substrates underlying different aspects of the language system. Some neuroimaging studies have supported this claim by finding neural differentiation for nouns and verbs [Brain 122 (1999) 2337] while others have argued against neural specialisation [Brain 119 (1996) 159; Brain 124 (2001) 1619]. We suggest that one reason why these inconsistencies may have arisen is because the morphological structure of nouns and verbs has been ignored. In an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study we test the hypothesis that the neural processing of nouns and verbs differs when they are inflected. We contrasted the processing of regularly inflected nouns (dogs) with regularly inflected verbs (hitting), and found that the LIFG was more strongly activated in processing regularly inflected verbs compared to regularly inflected nouns. Moreover, regions of LIFG that were more active in the fMRI study for inflected verbs partially overlapped with the lesions in patients who have particular problems with verb morphology. Taken together with previous studies, these results suggest that noun and verb stems do not differ in terms of their representation, but when verbs are morphologically complex they differentially engage those neural systems which are involved in processes of morpho-phonology and syntax.

    they were given a large evaluation battery that included the Spanish adaptation of the Personal Outcome Scale (POS). Likewise, fMRI sequences were obtained on a 3T resonator. For each subject, the DMN functional connectivity network was studied by estimating the indicators of complexity networks. The variability obtained in the Down syndrome group was studied by taking into account the Quality-of-Life distribution. Results: There is a negative correlation between the complexity of the connectivity networks and the Quality-of-Life values. Conclusions: The results are interpreted as evidence that, even at rest, connectivity levels are detected as already shown in the community population and that less intense connectivity levels correlate with higher levels of Quality of Life in people with Down syndrome. Background: The study of the Default Mode Network (DMN) has been shown to be sensitive for the recognition of connectivity patterns between the brain areas involved in this network. It has been hypothesized that the connectivity patterns in this network are related to different cognitive states. Purpose: In this study, we explored the relationship that can be estimated between these functional connectivity patterns of the DMN with the Quality-of-Life levels in people with Down syndrome, since no relevant data has been provided for this population.     International audience; La politique du Régent, favorable à l’essor de la vie théâtrale et à l’élargissement de l’offre de spectacles, modifie l’équilibre précaire qui s’était instauré entre les troupes pendant la fin du règne de Louis XIV. L’élargissement passe, d’une part, par le rappel des Italiens à Paris en 1716 à l’initiative du Régent lui-même qui sera leur protecteur, d’autre part, par la naissance d’une troupe de l’Opéra-Comique, fruit de l’accord financier entre les Forains et l’Académie royale de musique qui sous-traite son privilège avec l’accord du pouvoir politique. Cette libéralisation de la vie théâtrale entraîne une flambée de la concurrence entre troupes rivales : leur hostilité, dont les enjeux sont indissociablement d’ordre économique, institutionnel et esthétique, connaissent un point culminant. La querelle se mène sur deux fronts : sur la scène judiciaire, par des recours adressés aux instances officielles ; et sur la scène dramatique, au moyen d’une entreprise de séduction qui interpelle le public au moyen d’un répertoire dramatique qui rend compte, dans la fiction, des tensions opposant les troupes. Comment s’articulent les actions menées devant le tribunal de la justice et celui du parterre ? L’étude de l’année 1718 est ici proposée comme un révélateur de l’état et du fonctionnement du champ théâtral à l’aube des Lumières. Elle donne à voir la tension qui s’exerce au sein du champ théâtral entre deux instances de légitimation qui obéissent à des logiques distinctes et complémentaires, toutes deux nécessaires à la prospérité des théâtres : celle du pouvoir politique et celle du public citadin payant.

    The drugs currently available for treating epilepsy are only partially effective in managing this condition. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate new pathways that induce and promote epilepsy development. Previously, we found that platelets interact with neuronal glycolipids and actively secrete pro-inflammatory mediators during central nervous system (CNS) pathological conditions such as neuroinflammation and traumatic brain injury (TBI). These factors increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which may create a predisposition to epileptic seizures. In this study, we demonstrated that platelets substantially enhanced epileptic seizures in a mouse model of pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) -induced seizures. We found that platelets actively secreted serotonin, contributed to increased BBB permeability, and were present in the CNS parenchyma during epileptic seizures. Furthermore, platelets directly stimulated neuronal electric activity and induced the expression of specific genes related to early neuronal response, neuroinflammation, and oxidative phosphorylation, leading to oxidative stress in neurons. The intracranial injection of physiological numbers of platelets that mimicked TBI-associated bleeding was sufficient to induce severe seizures, which resembled conventional PTZ-induced epileptic activity. These findings highlight a conceptually new role of platelets in the development of epileptic seizures, and indicate a potential new therapeutic approach targeting platelets to prevent and treat epilepsy.

    Two systems for classification of morphology of the perisylvian cortical area have been suggested, that of Steinmetz et al. (1990) and that of Witelson and Kigar (1992). This study examines whether the variations in placement of these convolutions in the language cortex are related to diagnosis of dyslexia in a clinic-referred sample of 55 children ages 8 to 12 years. Additionally, the systems are compared to determine their relationship to neurolinguistic performance. In this study, the Steinmetz et al. (1990) system captured morphological distinctions which were relevant to performance on neurolinguistic measures, while Witelson and Kigar's (1992) system did not.     Background Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were used to investigate training-related changes in fast visual word recognition of functionally illiterate adults. Analyses focused on the left-lateralized occipito-temporal N170, which represents the earliest processing of visual word forms. Event-related brain potentials were recorded from 20 functional illiterates receiving intensive literacy training for adults, 10 functional illiterates not participating in the training and 14 regular readers while they read words, pseudowords or viewed symbol strings. Subjects were required to press a button whenever a stimulus was immediately repeated. Results Attending intensive literacy training was associated with improvements in reading and writing skills and with an increase of the word-related N170 amplitude. For untrained functional illiterates and regular readers no changes in literacy skills or N170 amplitude were observed. Conclusions Results of the present study suggest that the word-related N170 can still be modulated in adulthood as a result of the improvements in literacy skills.

    Dissociations of nouns and verbs following brain damage have been interpreted as evidence for distinct neural substrates underlying different aspects of the language system. Some neuroimaging studies have supported this claim by finding neural differentiation for nouns and verbs [Brain 122 (1999) 2337] while others have argued against neural specialisation [Brain 119 (1996) 159; Brain 124 (2001) 1619]. We suggest that one reason why these inconsistencies may have arisen is because the morphological structure of nouns and verbs has been ignored. In an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study we test the hypothesis that the neural processing of nouns and verbs differs when they are inflected. We contrasted the processing of regularly inflected nouns (dogs) with regularly inflected verbs (hitting), and found that the LIFG was more strongly activated in processing regularly inflected verbs compared to regularly inflected nouns. Moreover, regions of LIFG that were more active in the fMRI study for inflected verbs partially overlapped with the lesions in patients who have particular problems with verb morphology. Taken together with previous studies, these results suggest that noun and verb stems do not differ in terms of their representation, but when verbs are morphologically complex they differentially engage those neural systems which are involved in processes of morpho-phonology and syntax.

    they were given a large evaluation battery that included the Spanish adaptation of the Personal Outcome Scale (POS). Likewise, fMRI sequences were obtained on a 3T resonator. For each subject, the DMN functional connectivity network was studied by estimating the indicators of complexity networks. The variability obtained in the Down syndrome group was studied by taking into account the Quality-of-Life distribution. Results: There is a negative correlation between the complexity of the connectivity networks and the Quality-of-Life values. Conclusions: The results are interpreted as evidence that, even at rest, connectivity levels are detected as already shown in the community population and that less intense connectivity levels correlate with higher levels of Quality of Life in people with Down syndrome. Background: The study of the Default Mode Network (DMN) has been shown to be sensitive for the recognition of connectivity patterns between the brain areas involved in this network. It has been hypothesized that the connectivity patterns in this network are related to different cognitive states. Purpose: In this study, we explored the relationship that can be estimated between these functional connectivity patterns of the DMN with the Quality-of-Life levels in people with Down syndrome, since no relevant data has been provided for this population.     International audience; La politique du Régent, favorable à l’essor de la vie théâtrale et à l’élargissement de l’offre de spectacles, modifie l’équilibre précaire qui s’était instauré entre les troupes pendant la fin du règne de Louis XIV. L’élargissement passe, d’une part, par le rappel des Italiens à Paris en 1716 à l’initiative du Régent lui-même qui sera leur protecteur, d’autre part, par la naissance d’une troupe de l’Opéra-Comique, fruit de l’accord financier entre les Forains et l’Académie royale de musique qui sous-traite son privilège avec l’accord du pouvoir politique. Cette libéralisation de la vie théâtrale entraîne une flambée de la concurrence entre troupes rivales : leur hostilité, dont les enjeux sont indissociablement d’ordre économique, institutionnel et esthétique, connaissent un point culminant. La querelle se mène sur deux fronts : sur la scène judiciaire, par des recours adressés aux instances officielles ; et sur la scène dramatique, au moyen d’une entreprise de séduction qui interpelle le public au moyen d’un répertoire dramatique qui rend compte, dans la fiction, des tensions opposant les troupes. Comment s’articulent les actions menées devant le tribunal de la justice et celui du parterre ? L’étude de l’année 1718 est ici proposée comme un révélateur de l’état et du fonctionnement du champ théâtral à l’aube des Lumières. Elle donne à voir la tension qui s’exerce au sein du champ théâtral entre deux instances de légitimation qui obéissent à des logiques distinctes et complémentaires, toutes deux nécessaires à la prospérité des théâtres : celle du pouvoir politique et celle du public citadin payant.
