    To understand the genetic basis of coping style in European seabass, fish from a full factorial mating (10 females x 50 males) were reared in common garden and individually tagged. Individuals coping style was characterized through behavior tests at four different ages, categorizing fish into proactive or reactive: a hypoxia avoidance test (at 255 days post hatching, dph) and 3 risk-taking tests (at 276, 286 and 304 dph). We observed significant heritability of the coping style, higher for the average of risk-taking scores (h2 = 0.45 ± 0.14) than for the hypoxia avoidance test (h2 = 0.19 ± 0.10). The genetic correlations between the three risk-taking scores were very high (rA = 0.96–0.99) showing that although their repeatability was moderately high (rP = 0.64–0.72), successive risk-taking tests evaluated the same genetic variation. A mild genetic correlation between the results of the hypoxia avoidance test and the average of risk-taking scores (0.45 ± 0.27) suggested that hypoxia avoidance and risk-taking tests do not address exactly the same behavioral and physiological responses. Genetic correlations between weight and risk taking traits showed negative values whatever the test used in our population i.e. reactive individual weights were larger. The results of this quantitative genetic analysis suggest a potential for the development of selection programs based on coping styles that could increase seabass welfare without altering growth performances. Overall, it also contributes to a better understanding of the origin and the significance of individual behavioral differences.

    Growth is among the most important traits for animal breeding. Understanding the mechanisms underlying growth differences between individuals can contribute to improving growth rates through more efficient breeding schemes. Here, we report a transcriptomic study in muscle and brain of fast- and slow-growing turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), a relevant flatfish in European and Asian aquaculture. Gene expression and allelic association between the two groups were explored. Up-regulation of the anaerobic glycolytic pathway in the muscle of fast-growing fish was observed, indicating a higher metabolic rate of white muscle. Brain expression differences were smaller and not associated with major growth-related genes, but with regulation of feeding-related sensory pathways. Further, SNP variants showing frequency differences between fast- and slow-growing fish pointed to genomic regions likely involved in growth regulation, and three of them were individually validated through SNP typing. Although different mechanisms appear to explain growth differences among families, general mechanisms seem also to be involved, and thus, results provide a set of useful candidate genes and markers to be evaluated for more efficient growth breeding programs and to perform comparative genomic studies of growth in fish and vertebrates This work was funded by Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and European Regional Development Funds (AGL2012-35904), Ministry of Science and Innovation (Consolider Ingenio, Aquagenomics, CSD2007-00002), and Local Government.     Abstract Diplostomid trematodes comprise a large and diverse group of widespread digeneans whose larval stages are important parasitic pathogens that may exert serious impacts in wild and cultured freshwater fish. However, our understanding of their diversity remains incomplete especially in the tropics. Our study is the first application of a DNA-based approach to diplostomid diversity in the African continent by generating a database linking sequences for the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) barcode region and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rRNA gene cluster for brain-infecting diplostomid metacercariae from the catfish Clarias gariepinus. Analyses of newly-generated partial cox1 sequences for 34 larval isolates of Tylodelphys spp. from Tanzania and Diplostomum spp. from Tanzania and Nigeria revealed three strongly supported reciprocally monophyletic lineages of Tylodelphys spp. and one of an unknown species of Diplostomum. The average intraspecific divergence for the cox1 sequences for each recognised novel lineage was distinctly lower compared with interspecific divergence (0.46–0.75% vs 11.7–14.8%). The phylogenetic hypotheses estimated from Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses of ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 data exhibited congruent strong support for the cox1-derived lineages. Our study thus provides molecular-based evidence for the existence of three distinct brain-infecting species co-occurring in natural populations of C. gariepinus. Based on phylogenetic analyses, we re-allocated Diplostomum mashonense Beverley-Burton (1963) to the genus Tylodelphys as a new combination. We also generated cox1 and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 sequences for an unknown species of Diplostomum from another African fish host, Synodontis nigrita.

    The origins of the enigmatic pygmy right whale Caperea marginata, the only living member of its subfamily (Neobalaeninae), are an outstanding mystery of cetacean evolution. Its strikingly disparate morphology sets Caperea apart from all other whales, and has turned it into a wildcard taxon that holds the key to understanding modern baleen whale diversity. Morphological cladistics generally ally this species with right whales, whereas molecular analyses consistently cluster it with rorquals and grey whales (Balaenopteroidea). A recent study potentially resolved this conflict by proposing that Caperea belongs with the otherwise extinct Cetotheriidae, but has been strongly criticised on morphological grounds. Evidence from the neobalaenine fossil record could potentially give direct insights into morphological transitions, but is currently limited to just a single species: the Late Miocene Miocaperea pulchra, from Peru. We show that Miocaperea has a highly unusual morphology of the auditory region, resulting from a-presumably feeding-related-strengthening of the articulation of the hyoid apparatus with the skull. This distinctive arrangement is otherwise only found in the extinct Cetotheriidae, which makes Miocaperea a "missing link" that demonstrates the origin of pygmy right whales from cetotheriids, and confirms the latter's resurrection from the dead.

    Abstract. The reactive uptake of HOBr onto halogen-rich aerosols promotes conversion of Br−(aq) into gaseous reactive bromine (incl. BrO) with impacts on tropospheric oxidants and mercury deposition. However, experimental data quantifying HOBr reactive uptake on tropospheric aerosols is limited, and reported values vary in magnitude. This study re-examines the reaction kinetics of HOBr across a range of aerosol acidity conditions, focusing on chemistry within the marine boundary layer and volcanic plumes. We highlight that the termolecular approach to HOBr reaction kinetics, used in numerical model studies to date, is strictly only valid over a specific pH range. Here we re-evaluate the reaction kinetics of HOBr according to the general acid assisted mechanism. The rate of reaction of HOBr with halide ions becomes independent of pH at high acidity yielding an acid-independent second-order rate constant, kII. The limit of acid-saturation is poorly constrained by available experimental data, although a reported estimate for HOBr+ Br−(aq)+H+(aq), is kIIsat = 108–109 M−1 s−1, at pH ≲ 1. By consideration of halide nucleophilic strength and re-evaluation of reported uptake coefficient data on H2SO4-acidified sea-salt aerosol, we suggest the reaction of HOBr(aq) + Cl−(aq)+H+(aq) may saturate to become acid-independent at pH ≤ 6, with kIIsat ~104 M−1 s−1. This rate constant is multiple orders of magnitude lower (a factor of 103 at pH = 3 and a factor of 106 at pH = 0) than that currently assumed in numerical models of tropospheric BrO chemistry, which are based on the termolecular approach. Reactive uptake coefficients, γHOBr, were calculated as a function of composition using the revised HOBr kinetics, with kI = kII · [X−(aq)], and X = Br or Cl. γHOBr initially increases with acidity but subsequently declines with increasing H2SO4-acidification of sea-salt aerosol. The HOBr+Cl− uptake coefficient declines due to acid-displacement of HCl(g), reducing [Cl−(aq)]. The HOBr+Br− uptake coefficient also declines at very high H2SO4:Na ratios due to dilution of [Br−(aq)]. The greatest reductions in HOBr uptake coefficients occur for small particle sizes, across which the probability of diffusion of HOBr(aq) without reaction is highest. Our new uptake calculations are consistent with all reported experimental data thus resolve previously reported discrepancies within a unified uptake coefficient framework. The following implications for BrO chemistry in the marine boundary layer are highlighted: we confirm HOBr reactive uptake is rapid on moderately acidified supramicron aerosol, but predict very low HOBr reactive uptake coefficients on the highly-acidified submicron marine aerosol fraction. This re-evaluation is in contrast to the high HOBr reactive uptake previously assumed to occur on all acidified sea-salt aerosol. Instead, our uptake evaluation indicates that particle bromide in the submicron aerosol fraction is not easily depleted by HOBr uptake, and furthermore can be augmented by deposition of gas-phase bromine released from the supramicron particles. We present this mechanism as a first explanation for the observed (but previously unexplained) Br-enhancement (relative to Na) in submicron particles in the marine environment. Further, we find HOBr reactive uptake on acidified sea-salt aerosol is driven by reaction of HOBr+Br− rather than HOBr+Cl− (γHOBr + Br− > γHOBr−+Cl−) once HCl-displacement has occurred. Thus, the reduction in γHOBr + Br− as BrO chemistry progresses (noting γHOBr + Br− is a function of aerosol Br−(aq) concentration which declines as aerosol bromide is converted into gaseous-phase reactive bromine) will have greater importance in slowing overall HOBr reactive uptake as BrO chemistry evolves than has been assumed previously. We suggest both the above factors may explain the reported overprediction of BrO cycling in the marine environment by numerical models to date. First predictions of HOBr reactive uptake on sulphate particles in tropospheric volcanic plumes are presented. High (accommodation limited) HOBr+Br− uptake coefficient in concentrated (>1 ppmv SO2) plume environments supports rapid BrO formation under all conditions. However, the HOBr + Cl− uptake coefficient exhibits an inverse temperature trend which becomes more pronounced as the plume disperses. The HOBr+Br− coefficient also declines with temperature in dilute (~ppbv SO2) plumes. We infer that BrO chemistry can readily be sustained in downwind plumes entering the mid- to-upper troposphere, e.g. either from continuous degassing from elevated volcano summits (e.g. Etna, 3.3 km a.s.l.) or episodic eruptions (e.g. Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland). However, low HOBr reactive uptake coefficients may limit sustained BrO cycling in dilute plumes in the lower troposphere. In summary, our revised HOBr kinetics that includes acid-saturation indicates that current numerical models of BrO chemistry in the troposphere substantially overestimate the rate of HOBr reactive uptake on acidic halogen rich-particles, with implications for BrO chemistry in both the marine environment and volcanic plumes, as well as the wider troposphere.

    Abstract. In biogeochemical models coupled to ocean circulation models, vertical mixing is an important physical process which governs the nutrient supply and the plankton residence in the euphotic layer. However, vertical mixing is often poorly represented in numerical simulations because of approximate parameterizations of sub-grid scale turbulence, wind forcing errors and other mis-represented processes such as restratification by mesoscale eddies. Getting a sufficient knowledge of the nature and structure of these errors is necessary to implement appropriate data assimilation methods and to evaluate if they can be controlled by a given observation system. In this paper, Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to study mixing errors induced by approximate wind forcings in a three-dimensional coupled physical-biogeochemical model of the North Atlantic with a 1/4° horizontal resolution. An ensemble forecast involving 200 members is performed during the 1998 spring bloom, by prescribing perturbations of the wind forcing to generate mixing errors. The biogeochemical response is shown to be rather complex because of nonlinearities and threshold effects in the coupled model. The response of the surface phytoplankton depends on the region of interest and is particularly sensitive to the local stratification. In addition, the statistical relationships computed between the various physical and biogeochemical variables reflect the signature of the non-Gaussian behaviour of the system. It is shown that significant information on the ecosystem can be retrieved from observations of chlorophyll concentration or sea surface temperature if a simple nonlinear change of variables (anamorphosis) is performed by mapping separately and locally the ensemble percentiles of the distributions of each state variable on the Gaussian percentiles. The results of idealized observational updates (performed with perfect observations and neglecting horizontal correlations) indicate that the implementation of this anamorphosis method into sequential assimilation schemes can substantially improve the accuracy of the estimation with respect to classical computations based on the Gaussian assumption.

    Although many applications of small Autonomous Surface Vessels rely on two-dimensional state estimation, inspection tasks based on long-range sensors require more accurate attitude estimates. In the context of shoreline monitoring relying on a nodding laser scanner, we evaluate three different extended Kalman filter approaches with respect to an accurate ground truth in the range of millimeters. Our experimental setup allowed us to track the impact of sensors noise, including GPS non-Gaussian error, a phenomenon often underestimated. Extensive field experiments demonstrate that the use of a complementary filter in combination with a model-based extended Kalman filter performed best and reduced velocity errors by 73% compared to GPS. Finally, following our state estimation observations, we present a long-term shore monitoring result highlighting changes in the environment over a period of 6 months. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.     Most fishes experiencing challenging environments are able to adjust and adapt their physiology and behaviour to help them cope more effectively. Much of this flexibility is supported and influenced by cognition and neural plasticity. The understanding of fish cognition and the role played by different regions of the brain has improved significantly in recent years. Techniques such as lesioning, tract tracing and quantifying changes in gene expression help in mapping specialized brain areas. It is now recognized that the fish brain remains plastic throughout a fish's life and that it continues to be sensitive to environmental challenges. The early development of fish brains is shaped by experiences with the environment and this can promote positive and negative effects on both neural plasticity and cognitive ability. This review focuses on what is known about the interactions between the environment, the telencephalon and cognition. Examples are used from a diverse array of fish species, but there could be a lot to be gained by focusing research on neural plasticity and cognition in fishes for which there is already a wealth of knowledge relating to their physiology, behaviour and natural history, e.g. the Salmonidae.

Hence, the constraints imposed by the local conditions restrict the range of successful strategies by excluding species poorly adapted. In the present study, we compared the demographic strategies of fish caught in 47 estuaries of the North East Atlantic coast, aiming to determine the specific attributes of resident species and test for changes in trait associations along the environmental gradients. Eight demographic traits were considered to project our findings within a conceptual triangular model, composed on three endpoint strategies: (i) periodic (large size, long generation time, high fecundity); (ii) opportunistic (small size, short generation time, high reproductive effort); and (iii) equilibrium (low fecundity, large egg size, parental care). We demonstrated that various life history strategies co-exist in estuaries, but equilibrium species were scarce and restricted to euhaline open-water. Resident species form a specialised assemblage adapted to high spatiotemporal variability of estuarine conditions, i.e. opportunistic attributes associated with parental care. Even with these singular attributes, our findings revealed changes in distribution of resident species across the estuarine gradients linked to their life history traits. Among other patterns, the diversity of life history strategies significantly decreased from euhaline to oligohaline areas and along gradient of human disturbances. These trends were associated with a convergence of species traits to- ward short generation times, suggesting that long-lived species with late maturation are more severely impacted by disturbance and environmental stress.

    This deposit is composed by the main article plus the supplementary materials of the publication. The occurrence of emotions in non-human animals has been the focus of debate over the years. Recently, an interest in expanding this debate to non-tetrapod vertebrates and to invertebrates has emerged. Within vertebrates, the study of emotion in teleosts is particularly interesting since they represent a divergent evolutionary radiation from that of tetrapods, and thus they provide an insight into the evolution of the biological mechanisms of emotion. We report that Sea Bream exposed to stimuli that vary according to valence (positive, negative) and salience (predictable, unpredictable) exhibit different behavioural, physiological and neuromolecular states. Since according to the dimensional theory of emotion valence and salience define a two-dimensional affective space, our data can be interpreted as evidence for the occurrence of distinctive affective states in fish corresponding to each the four quadrants of the core affective space. Moreover, the fact that the same stimuli presented in a predictable vs. unpredictable way elicited different behavioural, physiological and neuromolecular states, suggests that stimulus appraisal by the individual, rather than an intrinsic characteristic of the stimulus, has triggered the observed responses. Therefore, our data supports the occurrence of emotion-like states in fish that are regulated by the individual's perception of environmental stimuli.     To understand the genetic basis of coping style in European seabass, fish from a full factorial mating (10 females x 50 males) were reared in common garden and individually tagged. Individuals coping style was characterized through behavior tests at four different ages, categorizing fish into proactive or reactive: a hypoxia avoidance test (at 255 days post hatching, dph) and 3 risk-taking tests (at 276, 286 and 304 dph). We observed significant heritability of the coping style, higher for the average of risk-taking scores (h2 = 0.45 ± 0.14) than for the hypoxia avoidance test (h2 = 0.19 ± 0.10). The genetic correlations between the three risk-taking scores were very high (rA = 0.96–0.99) showing that although their repeatability was moderately high (rP = 0.64–0.72), successive risk-taking tests evaluated the same genetic variation. A mild genetic correlation between the results of the hypoxia avoidance test and the average of risk-taking scores (0.45 ± 0.27) suggested that hypoxia avoidance and risk-taking tests do not address exactly the same behavioral and physiological responses. Genetic correlations between weight and risk taking traits showed negative values whatever the test used in our population i.e. reactive individual weights were larger. The results of this quantitative genetic analysis suggest a potential for the development of selection programs based on coping styles that could increase seabass welfare without altering growth performances. Overall, it also contributes to a better understanding of the origin and the significance of individual behavioral differences.
