    We investigated the role of culture in processing hierarchical syntactic structures in music. We examined whether violation of non-local dependencies manifest in event related potentials (ERP) for Western and Iranian excerpts by recording EEG while participants passively listened to sequences of modified/original excerpts. We also investigated oscillatory and synchronization properties of brain responses during processing of hierarchical structures. For the Western excerpt, subjective ratings of conclusiveness were marginally significant and the difference in the ERP components fell short of significance. However, ERP and behavioral results showed that while listening to culturally familiar music, subjects comprehended whether or not the hierarchical syntactic structure was fulfilled. Irregularities in the hierarchical structures of the Iranian excerpt elicited an early negativity in the central regions bilaterally, followed by two later negativities from 450–700 to 750–950 ms. The latter manifested throughout the scalp. Moreover, violations of hierarchical structure in the Iranian excerpt were associated with (i) an early decrease in the long range alpha phase synchronization, (ii) an early increase in the oscillatory activity in the beta band over the central areas, and (iii) a late decrease in the theta band phase synchrony between left anterior and right posterior regions. Results suggest that rhythmic structures and melodic fragments, representative of Iranian music, created a familiar context in which recognition of complex non-local syntactic structures was feasible for Iranian listeners. Processing of neural responses to the Iranian excerpt indicated neural mechanisms for processing of hierarchical syntactic structures in music at different levels of cortical integration.

    Abstract Electroencephalography (EEG) is an electrophysiological monitoring method to record electrical activity of the brain. Brain consists of four lobes which is frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital lobe. Each lobe has their own respective function and it release different rhythmic wave when carry out different actions. However, when performing a specific activity, not all the EEG channels tend to be informative to the particular activity. The need to optimize the number of channels is crucial to reduce computational complexity. The aim of this paper is to determine the informative EEG channel/s and brain region for typing activity. 20 healthy with right-handed subjects from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) were enrolled in this study. Typing task was performed for 3 trials and 5 minutes per trial. In EEG signal processing, Notch filter and Butterworth bandpass filter were used to remove powerline artefact and to filter the signal into alpha (8-13Hz) and beta waves (13-30Hz). Welch method was applied to extract features from typing task. The obtained results were then undergoing the statistical analysis before load into the K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) classifier. Based on this study, it is found that channel P3 in parietal region and channel T6 in temporal region give highest accuracy which is 99.44% for typing task activity.

    Authors: Laurent Sovet;

    Le bien-être subjectif se définit comme une approche hédonique du bonheur renvoyant à une évaluation générale de sa propre vie dans ses dimensions cognitives et affectives. Bien que ce concept ait fait l’objet d’une littérature scientifique abondante, peu de travaux ont porté explicitement sur ses relations avec la construction du choix d’orientation scolaire et professionnelle. Notre revue de la littérature met également en évidence l’opposition des approches ascendantes et descendantes dans l’étude des liens en ces variables rendant le sens de la causalité particulièrement complexe à appréhender. Ainsi, l’objectif de cette thèse est d’apporter une meilleure compréhension aux relations entre le bien-être subjectif et l’indécision vocationnelle. De même, afin de tester le rôle des caractéristiques individuelles et contextuelles, nous avons inscrit notre étude dans une comparaison interculturelle interrogeant des étudiants sud-coréens, étatsuniens et français. La première partie de nos résultats est largement consacrée à l’étude de la validité psychométrique des outils utilisés dans les différents contextes cibles tandis que la deuxième partie s’intéresse davantage à l’analyse des relations entre le bien-être subjectif et l’indécision vocationnelle. Une série de trois études fut conduite dans chaque pays cible dans le but d’examiner successivement le rôle modérateur des caractéristiques individuelles, des traits de la personnalité et du bien-être psychologique. Les résultats indiquent globalement que le bien-être subjectif est significativement associé à l’indécision vocationnelle quel que soit l’échantillon considéré bien que plusieurs effets modérateurs soient observés. À partir de notre revue de la littérature et des résultats obtenus, un modèle théorique des relations entre le bien-être subjectif et l’indécision vocationnelle est proposé différenciant les modèles ascendants et descendants par des mécanismes distincts. L’implication de ces résultats autour d’une vision holistique de l’individu est discutée dans des perspectives théoriques et pratiques. Subjective well-being may be defined as a hedonic approach of happiness referring to an overall evaluation of individual’s life integrating both cognitive and affective components. Although that concept has been the focus of a considerable scientific literature, few research explored explicitly its relationships with career decision-making process. Our literature review highlighted the opposition between bottom-up and top-down approaches in the study of the relationships between these two variables making particularly complex to determine the causal direction. Thus, the purpose of this thesis was to bring a better understanding on the relationships between subjective well-being and career indecision. Also, in order to test the role of individual and contextual characteristics, we conducted a cross-cultural comparison which include Korean, US, and French college students. The first part of our results was devoted to explore the psychometric properties of several instruments used in the different countries while the second part was more focused on the analysis of the relationships between subjective well-being and career indecision. A series of three studies were conducted in each target country for examining successively the moderator role of individual characteristics, personality traits, and psychological well-being. Overall, results showed that subjective well-being was significantly associated with career indecision across samples despite several moderator effects were observed. Based on our literature review and results, we developed a theoretical model integrating subjective well-being and career indecision while arguing distinctive mechanisms in bottom-up and top-down approaches. The implications of those results toward a holistic approach of individual counseling are discussed in both research and practical directions.

    Section one presents a method of analysis developed over the years in order to model and visualise the evolution of architectural objects. The method combines a systematic description of transformations, qualification and classification of references, and visualisation tools that support reasoning tasks inside an object’s lifeline, and across the whole collection of objects. In this section some fundamental epistemological issues will be discussed (diachronic bias, intersubjectivity, historical criticism, etc.). Details will be given on the choices we made in order to describe architectural transformations and to cope with classic uncertainty problems (trustworthiness, precision, credibility, etc.). Section one is concluded by a chapter presenting the set of time-oriented data visualisations designed for section two of the catalogue, and by an overview of that catalogue’s general layout. Rozdział pierwszy porusza podstawowe zagadnienia epistemologiczne związane z analizą ewolucji obiektów architektonicznych (analiza diachroniczna, intersubiektywność, krytyka historyczna, ...) i przedstawia opracowaną przez nas metodę. Poruszamy tu między innymi problem zróżnicowanej precyzji i wiarygodności danych historycznych, klasyfikację transformacji jakim podlegają obiekty architektoniczne, czy rolę wizualizacji w procesach analizy danych historycznych.

    Version preprint du même article publié p.11-26 16 pages. Volume écrit à la suite d'un colloque "Histoire et fiction", 19 et 20 mai 2008, Université Adam Mickiewicz, Poznan.; Animée par la volonté de réaliser une translatio studii et imperii, la Renaissance place l'écriture de l'histoire au cœur de ses préoccupations. L'historiographie se développe autour d'une revendication d'objectivité du témoignage. Cependant, dans le même temps, de grands écrivains se réclament du principe aristotélicien qui confère à la poésie et à la fable un pouvoir supérieur à celui de l'histoire. Ronsard théorise ainsi le rapport du poète et de l'historien à propos de la figuration de l'histoire en prônant une mimésis du vraisemblable dans laquelle les images tiennent une place essentielle. L'article cherche à expliciter les raisons de l'importance de ces images, à comprendre la conception de l'histoire que leur fabrication permet de mettre en œuvre. Pour cela on se référe essentiellement à " la harangue du duc de Guise aus soudards de Metz ", aux élégies de 1560, aux discours de 1562-1563 et à la Franciade. Transformation de la réalité en artéfact dans une poétique de l'imitation, l'image apparaît comme la révélation d'une vérité invisible, comme une réactualisation émotionnelle efficace, comme un accès à une conception de l'histoire qui oscille entre translatio réussie et méditation mélancolique. Elle est bien le support d'une philosophie poétique du temps.

    Neuroanatomic phenotypes are often assessed using volumetric analysis. Although powerful and versatile, this approach is limited in that it is unable to quantify changes in shape, to describe how regions are interrelated, or to determine whether changes in size are global or local. Statistical shape analysis using coordinate data from biologically relevant landmarks is the preferred method for testing these aspects of phenotype. To date, approximately fifty landmarks have been used to study brain shape. Of the studies that have used landmark-based statistical shape analysis of the brain, most have not published protocols for landmark identification or the results of reliability studies on these landmarks. The primary aims of this study were two-fold: (1) to collaboratively develop detailed data collection protocols for a set of brain landmarks, and (2) to complete an intra- and inter-observer validation study of the set of landmarks. Detailed protocols were developed for 29 cortical and subcortical landmarks using a sample of 10 boys aged 12 years old. Average intra-observer error for the final set of landmarks was 1.9 mm with a range of 0.72 mm-5.6 mm. Average inter-observer error was 1.1 mm with a range of 0.40 mm-3.4 mm. This study successfully establishes landmark protocols with a minimal level of error that can be used by other researchers in the assessment of neuroanatomic phenotypes.

    Authors: Hélène Tétrel;

    L’Historia regum Britannie de Geoffroy de Monmouth fut adaptée dans de nombreuses langues vernaculaires. L’adaptation islandaise (la Saga des Bretons) est conservée dans quatre témoins médiévaux, qui tous présentent des variantes importantes et/ou des lacunes en comparaison du texte latin. Le présent article, après avoir présenté la tradition manuscrite de la Saga des Bretons, s’intéresse plus particulièrement à l’épisode, conjoint dans la tradition galfrédienne, de sainte Ursule et du peuplement de l’Armorique (Historia regum Britannie, § 80 à 88). Cet épisode est rapporté dans deux des témoins, qui offrent deux versions différentes, quoique l’une et l’autre soient dérivées d’une même traduction norroise (aujourd’hui perdue). Le traitement de cette séquence montre tout d’abord la même incohérence dans le traitement de l’épisode du peuplement de la Bretagne ; il se signale aussi par l’usage de matériaux hagiographiques additionnels, qu’il partage avec d’autres textes islandais contemporains. How chapters 80 to 88 of Historia regum Britannie were dealt with in the Old Icelandic “ Brut” There are many vernacular adaptations of Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia regum Britannie. The Icelandic Saga of the Britons is kept in four medieval manuscripts which all offer variants and/or lacunae in comparison to the Latin original. This article first deals with the manuscript tradition of the saga, then focuses on the episode told in Geoffrey’s chapters 80 to 88. In these chapters, the story of Saint Ursula is linked to that of the expedition and the migration to Brittany. As kept in two manuscripts transmitting each a different version (though both originally go back to a first, now lost, translation into Old Icelandic), they offer interesting characteristics : the treatment of the Armorican episode is equally inconsistent in both versions, and both versions show use of additional, hagiographical material in the Ursula story, materials which are shared by other Icelandic medieval texts. Tétrel Hélène. Le traitement des paragraphes 80 à 88 de l’Historia regum Britannie dans le «Brut» islandais. In: Etudes Celtiques, vol. 42, 2016. pp. 185-211.

    L'analyse statistique de toutes les sous-especes connues d'Apis mellifera peut fournir une meilleure comprehension des relations entre les varietes geographiques de cette espece tres polymorphe. Des resultats satisfaisants n'ont ete obtenus que lentement en raison du temps necessaire pour rassembler un nombre suffisant d'echantillons qui constituent une population representative de la sous-espece. Les methodes statistiques multivariees, qui utilisent les mesures de 34 caracteres discriminants de divers types (taille corporelle, venation alaire, pilosite, coloration) ont donne jusqu'a present 24 groupes d'echantillons bien separes les uns des autres qui proviennent chacun d'une region geographique donnee. En consequence ces groupes peuvent etre decrits comme des sous-especes ou des races geographiques selon la definition en vigueur. Dans la representation graphique des resultats d'une l'analyse factorielle, les groupes sont ranges le long de l'axe 1 en fonction de la taille corporelle. L'axe 2 separe les abeilles des Balkans et de l'Italie des autres echantillons issus de la meme latitude, ce qui donne a la structure globale une forme en «Y». Si l'on ajoute un troisieme axe (en essayant d'abord de construire une figure tridimensionnelle a partir de la projection des plans), l'une des branches du « Y » se divise et la figure resultante resssemble a un trepied avec un tronc principal et trois branches correspondant chacune a un groupe de sous-especes d'une region geographique donnee. Dans l'etude presente nous avons positionne 252 echantillons appartenant a 21 sous-especes dans un espace virtuel (figs 1 et 2). Le logiciel statistique Almo permet d'attribuer une couleur aux differents groupes, de leur faire subir une rotation autour de tous les axes et de les analyser sous n'importe quel angle choisi. Le facteur (axe) 1 regroupe 45 % de la variation totale. Dans le tronc du triepied (branche A), tous les groupes se situent pres de l'axe 1 (fig 4). Ils sont tous d'origine tropicale, d'Afrique subsaharienne et d'Arabie, avec a l'extremite les abeilles les plus petites de l'espece (A m yemenitica). L'existence de trois branches laterales qui partent de l'axe 1 est confirmee : dans la branche O on trouve sept sous-especes du Proche-Orient (fig 5), separees par le facteur 3 (8 % de la variation totale) de la branche M, qui comporte les sous-especes d'Europe septentrionale et occidentale et celles d'Afrique du Nord; A m sahariensis occupe une position de transition avec la branche A (fig 6). La branche C, avec les sous-especes des Balkans et de l'Italie, depuis A m carnica au nord jusqu'a A m sicula au sud (fig 7), est identifiee par le facteur 2 (12 % de la variation totale). Cette derniere sous-espece occupe nettement une position de transition avec les abeilles d'Afrique du Nord, A m intermissa. Nous montrons qu'en utilisant des caracteres morphometriques appropries et les methodes statistiques multivariees, les sous-especes d'Apis mellifera peuvent etre separees en fonction de leur origine geographique. Le facteur 1, base sur la taille corporelle, separe les sous-especes des tropiques, de petite taille, de celles des climats plus froids, qui sont plus grandes. Le facteur 2, qui comprend plusieurs angles de la venation de l'extremite de l'aile anterieure et la longueur des poils, separe la branche C des autres sous-especes de la zone temperee. Le facteur 3, calcule a partir de plusieurs angles de la venation de la base de l'aile anterieure principalement, de la largeur du tomentum et de la couleur des tergites, permet de distinguer les branches O et M. Les points centraux (centroides) des groupes terminaux de ces trois branches, A m carnica, A m mellifera et A m caucasica, sont a peu pres equidistants (fig 3), c'est-a-dire eg

    Article disponible en ligne à l'adresse : https://journals.openedition.org/mcv/4206#text; International audience; Entre 1549 et 1556, on observe en Espagne une concentration inédite de publications de traductions versifiées de poèmes épiques classiques et italiens. Cette coïncidence chronologique est le symptôme d’un intérêt nouveau pour la poésie épique, qui annonce et prépare le fleurissement du genre dans la péninsule Ibérique au cours de la seconde moitié du siècle. Nous proposons de voir dans cet ensemble un événement littéraire et de lire ces textes comme les premiers poèmes épiques en langue espagnole. Par une nouvelle fidélité à la lettre du texte original et par l’adoption d’une forme versifiée italianisante ces traductions rompent avec les tentatives antérieures et diffusent une nouvelle image des textes. Les poètes mettent ainsi leur plume au service de l’enrichissement du patrimoine littéraire et linguistique espagnol. Les contemporains lisent ces textes comme des poèmes originaux et c’est comme tels que l’on tend à les éditer.

    Using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to improve visuospatial working memory (vsWM) has received considerable attention over the past few years. However, fundamental issues remain, such as the optimal frequency, the generality of behavioral effects, and the anatomical specificity of stimulation.Here we examined the effects of two theory-driven tACS protocols for improving vsWM on behavioral and electroencephalogram (EEG) measures.Twenty adults each completed 3 HD-tACS conditions (Tuned, Slow, and Sham) on two separate days. The Tuned condition refers to a situation in which the frequency of tACS is tuned to individual theta peak measured during a vsWM task. By contrast, the frequency was fixed to 4 Hz in the Slow condition. A high-definition tACS was deployed to target smaller frontal and parietal regions for increasing their phase-locking values. During each tACS condition, participants performed vsWM, mental rotation (MR), and arithmetic tasks. Resting-state EEG (rs-EEG) was recorded before and after each condition.Compared with Sham, Tuned but not Slow improved both vsWM and MR but not arithmetics. The rs-EEG recording showed an increased fronto-parietal synchrony for Tuned, and this increase in synchronicity was correlated with the behavioral improvement. A follow-up study showed no behavioral improvement in Tuned with an anti-phase setting.We provide the first evidence that simulating right fronto-parietal network with the tuned frequency increases the interregional synchronicity and improves performance on two spatial tasks. The results provide insight into the structure of spatial abilities as well as suggestions for stimulating the fronto-parietal network.

    Authors: Laurent Sovet;
