description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Contribution for newspaper or weekly magazine , Other literature type 2017 France EnglishPublisher:HAL CCSD Authors: Lindenskov, Lena; Kirsted, Katrine;Lindenskov, Lena; Kirsted, Katrine;“There is nothing so practical as a good theory”. The statement from Kurt Lewin is frequently cited, also in mathematics education. The statement invites for and requires close cooperation between different agents, whatever their own specific relation to practice and theory is. It is not a straightforward endeavour. One reason is that the term theory as well as the term practice may very well be given different meanings by different agents. This variation is in our view to be considered in “implementation research” and Lewin’s statement ought to be qualified by two questions “Who cares for a good theory?” and “What makes a good theory good for whom?” This paper explores this variation of how theory is perceived by mathematics teachers and by mathematics researchers involved in a developmental project on early intervention in mathematics education in Denmark. The paper exemplifies how agents’ quite different work conditions and work requirements seem to constitute qualitative different needs for theoretical constructs, despite some common interest, too. D'on prové i de què serveix?

In such a system, the information is encoded by exploiting channel randomness i.e. the fact that channels between different transmit and receive antennas are random. This difference is used to distinguish among the transmit antennas. While SSK uses only antenna index to transmit data, SM also uses ordinary signal modulation. In wireless secrecy systems, one of the key performance measures is secrecy capacity. It specifies the rate at which the transmitter can communicates on the main link to the desired receiver while this information cannot be decoded by the eavesdropper. We investigate SM and SSK in the context of wireless secrecy capacity when the underlying modulation and the difference between the legitimate and eavesdropper signal to noise ratios (SNRs) are varied.

Phantom limb pain (PLP) represents a major debilitating condition for amputees. No effective therapy has been reported. Non-painful surface electrical stimulation may induce temporary significant alleviation of PLP. Preliminary results of a study attempting to design a methodology for delivery and evaluation of possible quantifiable effects at the cortical level of steady-state surface stimulation are presented for two healthy subjects. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were evaluated before and after delivery of a steady-state stimulus applied at wrist along the median nerve. Characterization of evoked sensation induced in hand by the steady-state stimuli was performed. The sensory input artificially generated by the steady-state stimuli influenced cortical activation reflected in changes in N1 and P2 components of SEP. N1 suppression and changes in P2 amplitude after steady state stimulation between 1 to 7 minutes were observed. Analysis of changes in SEP components in a larger population may contribute to defining markers of temporary cortical plastic changes driven by steady-state stimuli possibly assessing the efficacy of these stimuli when attempting to reverse cortical plastic changes following amputation and relief of PLP upon specific delivery through surface electrical stimulation in the periphery.

Transcranial Current Stimulation (tCS) is a recent development for non-invasive brain stimulation. At present tCS introduces large artifacts into simultaneous EEG (electroencephalogram) recordings, which must be removed to enable brain changes from during the stimulation to be monitored. This paper presents a new approach for removing artifacts of transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS) from simultaneous EEG. Termed the Superposition of Moving Averages (SMA) our approach is independent of the number of EEG channels used and has a low computational complexity for use in real-time online artifact removal and data responsive stimulation. Compared to a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) approach our results show that SMA achieves superior artifact removal performance, especially with regards to the use of low channel count EEG devices.

They require a top-down approach: programmers first write choreographies, and then use them to verify or synthesize their programs. However, most existing software does not come with choreographies yet, which prevents their application. To attack this problem, we propose a novel methodology (called choreography extraction) that, given a set of programs or protocol specifications, automatically constructs a choreography that describes their behavior. The key to our extraction is identifying a set of paths in a graph that represents the symbolic execution of the programs of interest. Our method improves on previous work in several directions: we can now deal with programs that are equipped with a state and internal computation capabilities; time complexity is dramatically better; we capture programs that are correct but not necessarily synchronizable, i.e., they work because they exploit asynchronous communication.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Contribution for newspaper or weekly magazine , Other literature type 2017 France EnglishPublisher:HAL CCSD Authors: Lindenskov, Lena; Kirsted, Katrine;Lindenskov, Lena; Kirsted, Katrine;“There is nothing so practical as a good theory”.
