    We apply some of the ideas of the Ph.D. Thesis of G. A. Margulis to Teichmuller space.     We investigate the non-universal part of the orbital entanglement spectrum (OES) of the nu = 1/3 fractional quantum Hall effect (FQH) ground-state with Coulomb interactions. The non-universal part of the spectrum is the part that is missing in the Laughlin model state OES whose level counting is completely determined by its topological order. We find that the OES levels of the Coulomb interaction ground-state are organized in a hierarchical structure that mimic the excitation-energy structure of the model pseudopotential Hamiltonian which has a Laughlin ground state. These structures can be accurately modeled using Jain's "composite fermion" quasihole-quasiparticle excitation wavefunctions. To emphasize the connection between the entanglement spectrum and the energy spectrum, we also consider the thermodynamical OES of the model pseudopotential Hamiltonian at finite temperature. The observed good match between the thermodynamical OES and the Coulomb OES suggests a relation between the entanglement gap and the true energy gap. Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures

    Making a categorical judgment can systematically bias our subsequent perception of the world. We show that these biases are well explained by a self-consistent Bayesian observer whose perceptual inference process is causally conditioned on the preceding choice. We quantitatively validated the model and its key assumptions with a targeted set of three psychophysical experiments, focusing on a task sequence where subjects first had to make a categorical orientation judgment before estimating the actual orientation of a visual stimulus. Subjects exhibited a high degree of consistency between categorical judgment and estimate, which is difficult to reconcile with alternative models in the face of late, memory related noise. The observed bias patterns resemble the well-known changes in subjective preferences associated with cognitive dissonance, which suggests that the brain’s inference processes may be governed by a universal self-consistency constraint that avoids entertaining ‘dissonant’ interpretations of the evidence.

    In this paper we construct an abelian category of "mixed perverse sheaves" attached to any realization of a Coxeter group, in terms of the associated Elias-Williamson diagrammatic category. This construction extends previous work of the first two authors, where we worked with parity complexes instead of diagrams, and we extend most of the properties known in this case to the general setting. As an application we prove that the split Grothendieck group of the Elias-Williamson diagrammatic category is isomorphic to the corresponding Hecke algebra, for any choice of realization. 53 pages. v2: minor corrections

    Permutation Entropy (PE) has been shown to be a useful tool for time series analysis due to its low computational cost and noise robustness. This has drawn for its successful application in many fields. Some of these include damage detection, disease forecasting, and financial volatility analysis. However, to successfully use PE, an accurate selection of two parameters is needed: the permutation dimension $n$ and embedding delay $\tau$. These parameters are often suggested by experts based on a heuristic or by a trial and error approach. unfortunately, both of these methods can be time-consuming and lead to inaccurate results. To help combat this issue, in this paper we investigate multiple schemes for automatically selecting these parameters with only the corresponding time series as the input. Specifically, we develop a frequency-domain approach based on the least median of squares and the Fourier spectrum, as well as extend two existing methods: Permutation Auto-Mutual Information (PAMI) and Multi-scale Permutation Entropy (MPE) for determining $\tau$. We then compare our methods as well as current methods in the literature for obtaining both $\tau$ and $n$ against expert-suggested values in published works. We show that the success of any method in automatically generating the correct PE parameters depends on the category of the studied system. Specifically, for the delay parameter $\tau$, we show that our frequency approach provides accurate suggestions for periodic systems, nonlinear difference equations, and ECG/EEG data, while the mutual information function computed using adaptive partitions provides the most accurate results for chaotic differential equations. For the permutation dimension $n$, both False Nearest Neighbors and MPE provide accurate values for $n$ for most of the systems with $n = 5$ being suitable in most cases.     We survey the properties of the log-correlated Gaussian field (LGF), which is a centered Gaussian random distribution (generalized function) $h$ on $\mathbb R^d$, defined up to a global additive constant. Its law is determined by the covariance formula $$\mathrm{Cov}\bigl[ (h, \phi_1), (h, \phi_2) \bigr] = \int_{\mathbb R^d \times \mathbb R^d} -\log|y-z| \phi_1(y) \phi_2(z)dydz$$ which holds for mean-zero test functions $\phi_1, \phi_2$. The LGF belongs to the larger family of fractional Gaussian fields obtained by applying fractional powers of the Laplacian to a white noise $W$ on $\mathbb R^d$. It takes the form $h = (-\Delta)^{-d/4} W$. By comparison, the Gaussian free field (GFF) takes the form $(-\Delta)^{-1/2} W$ in any dimension. The LGFs with $d \in \{2,1\}$ coincide with the 2D GFF and its restriction to a line. These objects arise in the study of conformal field theory and SLE, random surfaces, random matrices, Liouville quantum gravity, and (when $d=1$) finance. Higher dimensional LGFs appear in models of turbulence and early-universe cosmology. LGFs are closely related to cascade models and Gaussian branching random walks. We review LGF approximation schemes, restriction properties, Markov properties, conformal symmetries, and multiplicative chaos applications. Comment: 24 pages, 2 figures
