    International audience; This paper describes a model for simulating the behavior of soft MnZn, This model takes into account both hysteresis and dynamic phenomena. The temperature is introduced using behavioral laws. In fact, the following model requires only few parameters. It estimates iron losses and characteristics, such as B(H), phi>(*) over bar * (t), and the induced electromotive force. The obtained results are compared with measured data for three soft MnZn ferrites currently used in power electronics. The comparison found good agreement in a wide range of operating frequencies for temperatures ranging from 40 to 140 degreesC.

    Context. The identification of the sources that reionized the Universe and their specific contribution to this process are key missing pieces of our knowledge of the early Universe. Faint star-forming galaxies may be the main contributors to the ionizing photon budget during the epoch of reionization, but their escaping photons cannot be detected directly due to inter-galactic medium opacity. Hence, it is essential to characterize the properties of faint galaxies with significant Lyman continuum (LyC) photon leakage up to z ∼ 4 to define indirect indicators allowing analogs to be found at the highest redshift. Aims. Long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) typically explode in star-forming regions of faint, star-forming galaxies. Through LGRB afterglow spectroscopy it is possible to detect directly LyC photons. Our aim is to use LGRBs as tools to study LyC leakage from faint, star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Methods. Here we present the observations of LyC emission in the afterglow spectra of GRB 191004B at z = 3.5055, together with those of the other two previously known LyC-leaking LGRB host galaxies (GRB 050908 at z = 3.3467, and GRB 060607A at z = 3.0749), to determine their LyC escape fraction and compare their properties. Results. From the afterglow spectrum of GRB 191004B we determine a neutral hydrogen column density at the LGRB redshift of log(NH I/cm−2) = 17.2 ± 0.15, and negligible extinction (AV = 0.03 ± 0.02 mag). The only metal absorption lines detected are C IV and Si IV. In contrast to GRB 050908 and GRB 060607A, the host galaxy of GRB 191004B displays significant Lyman-alpha (Lyα) emission. From its Lyα emission and the non-detection of Balmer emission lines we constrain its star-formation rate (SFR) to 1 ≤ SFR ≤ 4.7 M⊙ yr−1. We fit the Lyα emission with a shell model and find parameters values consistent with the observed ones. The absolute (relative) LyC escape fractions we find for GRB 191004B, GRB 050908 and GRB 060607A are of 0.35−0.11+0.10 (0.43−0.13+0.12), 0.08−0.04+0.05 (0.08−0.04+0.05) and 0.20−0.05+0.05 (0.45−0.15+0.15), respectively. We compare the LyC escape fraction of LGRBs to the values of other LyC emitters found from the literature, showing that LGRB afterglows can be powerful tools to study LyC escape for faint high-redshift star-forming galaxies. Indeed we could push LyC leakage studies to much higher absolute magnitudes. The host galaxies of the three LGRBs presented here have all M1600 > −19.5 mag, with the GRB 060607A host at M1600 > −16 mag. LGRB hosts may therefore be particularly suitable for exploring the ionizing escape fraction in galaxies that are too faint or distant for conventional techniques.     A search for single sneutrino production under the assumption that R-parity is violated via a single dominant $LL\bar{E}$ coupling is presented. This search considers the process ${\rm e} \gamma {\smash{\mathop{\to}}} \tilde{\nu}\ell$ and is performed using the data collected by the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies from 189 GeV up to 209 GeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 637.1 $\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$. The numbers of observed candidate events are in agreement with Standard Model expectations and 95% confidence level upper limits on five of the $LL\bar{E}$ couplings are given as a function of the assumed sneutrino mass.     Nowadays, electrical energy is presented as the best alternative to be used in the non-propulsive aeronautic applications compared to hydraulic and pneumatic energies. The increase of embedded power in the aircraft causes the development of DC network over AC one, keeping the actual power transmission cables that will be subjected to new constraints. The anticipation of electric conductivity within the cable insulating system becomes essential in order to predict the electric field distribution and prevent any electric breakdown within insulating materials. This article presents experimental characterisation of PI (polyimide, Kapton-FN) and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), two polymers used as insulators in the actual aeronautic cables. Current measurements are performed for different electric fields and temperatures, and the current behaviour is analysed with the help of a conductivity law. We then discuss the conductivity law and its optimized parameters.

    Using metamaterial absorbers, we have shown that metallic layers in the absorbers do not necessarily constitute undesired resistive heating problem for photovoltaics. Tailoring the geometric skin depth of metals and employing the natural bulk absorbance characteristics of the semiconductors in those absorbers can enable the exchange of undesired resistive losses with the useful optical absorbance in the active semiconductors. Thus, Ohmic loss dominated metamaterial absorbers can be converted into photovoltaic near-perfect absorbers with the advantage of harvesting the full potential of light management offered by the metamaterial absorbers. Based on experimental permittivity data for indium gallium nitride, we have shown that between 75%-95% absorbance can be achieved in the semiconductor layers of the converted metamaterial absorbers. Besides other metamaterial and plasmonic devices, our results may also apply to photodectors and other metal or semiconductor based optical devices where resistive losses and power consumption are important pertaining to the device performance.     We report the detection of CO emission from the optically luminous, radio-quiet quasar J140955.5+562827, at a redshift z_CO =2.583. We also present VLA continuum mapping results and VLBA high spatial resolution observations at 1.4 GHz. Both the CO(3-2) and CO(7-6) emission lines are detected using the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer. The 3-2/7-6 line luminosity ratio is about 1/3 indicating the presence of warm and dense molecular gas with an estimated mass of 6x10^10 Msun. The infrared-to-CO luminosity ratio is L_FIR/L'_CO(1-0) \approx 500 Lsun (Kkms^-1 pc^2)^-1,comparable with values found for other high-z sources where CO line emission is seen. J1409+5628 is detected using the VLA with a 1.4 GHz rest-frame luminosity density of 4.0x10^25 W Hz^-1. The radio to far-infrared ratio, q, has a value of 2.0 which is consistent with the values found in star forming galaxies. At the 30 mas resolution of the VLBA, J1409+5628 is not detected with a 4 sigma upper limit to the surface brightness of 0.29 mJy beam^-1. This implies a limit to the intrinsic brightness temperature of 2x10^5 K at 8 GHz, typical for nuclear starbursts and two or more orders of magnitude weaker than typical radio-loud active galactic nuclei. Both the properties of the CO line emission and the radio emission from J1409+5628 are therefore consistent with those expected for a star forming galaxy. In J1409+5628 young massive stars are the dominant source of dust heating, accounting for most of the infrared luminosity, and the massive reservoir of molecular gas can sustain the star formation rate of a few 1000 \Msun yr^-1 implied by the far-infrared luminosity for about 10 million years.     International audience; We demonstrate an in-fiber gas phase chemical detection architecture in which a chemiluminescent (CL) reaction is spatially and spectrally matched to the core modes of hollow photonic bandgap (PBG) fibers in order to enhance detection efficiency. A peroxide-sensitive CL material is annularly shaped and centered within the fiber's hollow core, thereby increasing the overlap between the emission intensity and the intensity distribution of the low-loss fiber modes. This configuration improves the sensitivity by 0.9 dB/cm compared to coating the material directly on the inner fiber surface, where coupling to both higher loss core modes and cladding modes is enhanced. By integrating the former configuration with a custom-built optofluidic system designed for concomitant controlled vapor delivery and emission measurement, we achieve a limit-of-detection of 100 parts per billion (ppb) for hydrogen peroxide vapor. The PBG fibers are produced by a new fabrication method whereby external gas pressure is used as a control knob to actively tune the transmission bandgaps through the entire visible range during the thermal drawing process.

    We present 2D multi-group flux-limited diffusion magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations of the Accretion-Induced Collapse (AIC) of a rapidly-rotating white dwarf. We focus on the dynamical role of MHD processes after the formation of a millisecond-period protoneutron star. We find that including magnetic fields and stresses can lead to a powerful explosion with an energy of a few Bethe, rather than a weak one of at most 0.1 Bethe, with an associated ejecta mass of ~0.1Msun, instead of a few 0.001Msun. The core is spun down by ~30% within 500ms after bounce, and the rotational energy extracted from the core is channeled into magnetic energy that generates a strong magnetically-driven wind, rather than a weak neutrino-driven wind. Baryon loading of the ejecta, while this wind prevails, precludes it from becoming relativistic. This suggests that a GRB is not expected to emerge from such AICs during the early protoneutron star phase, except in the unlikely event that the massive white dwarf has sufficient mass to lead to black hole formation. In addition, we predict both negligible 56Ni-production (that should result in an optically-dark, adiabatically-cooled explosion) and the ejection of 0.1Msun of material with an electron fraction of 0.1-0.2. Such pollution by neutron-rich nuclei puts strong constraints on the possible rate of such AICs. Moreover, being free from ``fallback,'' such highly-magnetized millisecond-period protoneutron stars may later become magnetars, and the magnetically-driven winds may later transition to Poynting-flux-dominated, relativistic winds, eventually detectable as GRBs at cosmological distances.     The SuperNova / Acceleration Probe (SNAP) is a space-based experiment to measure the expansion history of the Universe and study both its dark energy and the dark matter. The experiment is motivated by the startling discovery that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating. A 0.7 square-degree imager comprised of 36 large format fully-depleted n-type CCD's sharing a focal plane with 36 HgCdTe detectors forms the heart of SNAP, allowing discovery and lightcurve measurements simultaneously for many supernovae. The imager and a high-efficiency low-resolution integral field spectrograph are coupled to a 2-m three mirror anastigmat wide-field telescope, which will be placed in a high-earth orbit. The SNAP mission can obtain high-signal-to-noise calibrated light-curves and spectra for over 2000 Type Ia supernovae at redshifts between z=0.1 and 1.7. The resulting data set can not only determine the amount of dark energy with high precision, but test the nature of the dark energy by examining its equation of state. In particular, dark energy due to a cosmological constant can be differentiated from alternatives such as "quintessence", by measuring the dark energy's equation of state to an accuracy of +/-0.05, and by studying its time dependence.     International audience; Solution-processed organometallic perovskites have rapidly developed into a top candidate for the active layer of photovoltaic devices. Despite the remarkable progress associated with perovskite materials, many questions about the fundamental photophysical processes taking place in these devices remain open. High on the list of unexplained phenomena are very modest mobilities despite low charge carrier effective masses. Moreover, experiments elucidate unique degradation of photocurrent affecting stable operation of perovskite solar cells. These puzzles suggest that while ionic hybrid perovskite devices may have efficiencies on par with conventional Si and GaAs devices, they exhibit more complicated charge transport phenomena. Here we report the results from an in-depth computational study of small polaron formation, electronic structure, charge density, and reorganization energies using both periodic boundary conditions and isolated structures. Using the hybrid Density Functional Theory, we found that volumetric strain in a CsPbI3 cluster creates a polaron with binding energy of around 300 meV and 900 meV for holes and electrons, respectively. In the MAPbI3 (MA=CH3NH3) cluster, both volumetric strain and MA reorientation effects lead to larger binding energies at around 600 meV and 1300 meV for holes and electrons, respectively. Such large reorganization energies suggest appearance of small polarons in organometallic perovskite materials. The fact that both volumetric lattice strain and MA molecular rotational degrees of freedom can cooperate to create and stabilize polarons, indicates that in order to mitigate this problem, formamidinium (FA=HC(NH2)2) and cesium (Cs) based crystals and alloys, are potentially better materials for solar cell and other optoelectronic applications.
