Later on, but usually without explicit indication, these two terms stand likewise for two theories about the nature of mathematical activity: on the one hand you concentrate on investigations into the conditions governing the construction (intuition) of mathematical objects, on the other hand you try to describe (analyze) domains of already existing objects.

Unlike the Tunisian and Egyptian uprisings in 2011, the Syrian Revolution has endured for more than three years. The uprising burst from the “peripheries” of the regime into an organized national movement, clinging at the beginning to the ideal of a nonviolent, nonsectarian upheaval aiming at a democratic Syria. Yet, the dynamics of contention between the regime and social movements have been re-shaped, leading to a return of violence with the risks of sectarian civil war looming.

This article explores different scripts of La reine Margot from Chéreau’s Archives in the Bibliothèque du Film, between the first synopsis of May 1989 and the definitive version of April 1993. Under the joint signatures of Danièle Thomson and Chéreau, the adaptation transforms Dumas’ serialized novel into an art-house film, a sentimental novel into a violent political movie which exhibits sexual politics and relationships of domination in the French royal family of Valois. Dumas’ misogyny is stressed, through evil Catherine Medici (Virna Lisi) but also through Margot (Isabelle Adjani) ill-treated by her brothers and their friends. The film-maker declared he was inspired not by historical documents but by Scorsese’s mafia movies and Visconti’s The Damned.

The main reason for persistent disagreement is the lack of comparative empirical data on parliamentary behaviour in EU affairs. The article aims to contribute to this debate by presenting the first comparative quantitative data on European affairs activities of national parliaments and by explaining the empirical variation. The development of a unique dataset including all 27 national parliaments allows a series of explanatory variables to be tested for the level of parliamentary activity at both the committee and the plenary levels. The analysis shows that institutional strength in EU affairs plays an important role. Overall, however, EU activities can be better explained with a mix of institutional capacities and motivational incentives. The specific combinations vary for different types of activities.

Studies of the neural correlates of attention commonly treat sustained attention as an isolated construct, measured with computerized continuous performance tests. However, in any ecological context, sustained attention interacts with other executive functions and depends on lower level perceptual processing. Such interactions occur, for example, in inhibition of interference, and processing of complex hierarchical stimuli; both of which are important for successful ecological attention. Motivated by the need for more studies on neural correlates of higher cognition, I present an experiment to investigate these interactions of attention in 17 healthy participants measured with high-resolution electroencephalography. Participants perform a novel 2-alternative forced-choice computerised performance test, the Primed Subjective Illusory Contour Attention Task (PSICAT), which presents gestalt-stimuli targets with distractor primes to induce interference inhibition during complex-percept processing. Using behavioural and brain-imaging analyses, I demonstrate the novel result that task-irrelevant incongruency can evoke stronger behavioural and neural responses than the task-relevant stimulus condition; a potentially important finding in attention disorder research. PSICAT is available as an open-source code repository at the following url, allowing researchers to reuse and adapt it to their requirements. Peer reviewed

I will explain why, in keeping with the history of the discipline itself, rhetoric can be a powerful tool for critical literacy. It can help raise our awareness of how social, political, ethical issues are always rhetorically constructed and why they are always the outcome of arbitration about the right linguistic and rhetorical choices to make in particular rhetorical situations. One of the basic epistemological tenets of this article is that, instead of confining ourselves to a single rhetorical theory, we can choose among the huge rhetorical heritage at our disposal to elaborate a coherent analytical framework to investigate the message conveyed by a text, be it oral, written, visual, or one that combines these three modes. In this article,I have drawn from Chaïm Perelman’s New Rhetoric and Kenneth Burke’s Dramatism to analyze a multi-semiotic document.

The study by Busch and Morys is based on a review of official texts, including educational policy documents, scientific and journalistic articles, interviews, statements of teachers and experts. This methodological approach considers a variety of arguments in the debate and highlights the key points which relate more broadly to the role of secular schools in the ideology of the French Republic on social integration. Our aim here is to provide a non-exhaustive historical perspective in the aim of better understanding the significance of these very topical issues.
