    AbstractThe parameterization scheme that represents gravity waves due to convection in LMDz‐6A, the atmospheric components of the IPSL coupled climate model (IPSLCM6), is directly compared to Strateole‐2 balloon observations made in the lower tropical stratosphere from November 2019 to February 2020. The input meteorological fields necessary to run the parameterization offline are extracted from the ERA5 reanalysis and correspond to the instantaneous meteorological conditions found underneath the balloons. In general, we find a fair agreement between measurements of the momentum fluxes due to waves with periods less than 1 hr and the parameterization. The correlation of the daily values between the observations and the results of the parameterization is around 0.4, which is statistically elevated considering that we analyze around 600 days of data and surprisingly good considering that the parameterization has not been tuned: the scheme is just the standard one that helps producing a quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO) in the IPSLCM6 model. Online simulations also show that the measured values of momentum fluxes are well representative of the zonally and averaged values of momentum fluxes needed in LMDz‐6A to simulate a QBO. The observations also show that longer waves with periods smaller than a day carry about twice as much flux as waves with periods smaller than an hour, which is a challenge since the low period waves that make the difference are potentially in the “gray zone” of most climate models.

    Abstract The effect of magnetic field ripple on tokamak plasma without turbulence is studied numerically and augmented with a reduced analytical model that includes neoclassical processes in the presence of non-axisymmetric perturbation and stochastic transport. For this study, a magnetic field ripple perturbation has been implemented in the GYSELA gyrokinetic code. This implementation has been verified thanks to a test of toroidal angular momentum conservation. The GYSELA code was then successfully benchmarked against the NEO code, which solves the drift kinetic equation, and against the reduced model in the collisionality range ν ⋆ ∈ [0.05–0.5] for several amplitudes of the magnetic ripple. An observation, shared by the model, the NEO code and GYSELA simulations is that the thermal drive of the mean poloidal velocity—measured by the k V P coefficient—decreases sharply for large yet experimentally relevant magnetic ripple amplitudes, and may even change sign.

    : This article discusses the use of the past in regard to the gay sexual culture of the 1970s in three AIDS plays: Robert Chesley’s Jerker (1986), Victor Bumbalo’s Tell (1993) and Michael Kearns’s intimacies (1989). The themes explored—celebrating the sexual freedom of the past against contemporary criticism, commemorating places where gay men could meet for sexual encounters, and a sex continuum joining the busy nightlife of the past to the stern “here and now” of AIDS—stem from memory. Sex is only possible as a past activity and narrated as such in these plays, making them at the same time “obituary plays,” because they mourn sexual culture along with specific people, but also “memory plays,” because the memory that permeates them also omits some details, all the while magnifying others, in ways different from the plays of Tennessee Williams, who invented the term.

    We develop a new approach to study the long time behaviour of solutions to nonlinear stochastic differential equations in the sense of McKean, as well as propagation of chaos for the corresponding mean-field particle system approximations. Our approach is based on a sticky coupling between two solutions to the equation. We show that the distance process between the two copies is dominated by a solution to a one-dimensional nonlinear stochastic differential equation with a sticky boundary at zero. This new class of equations is then analyzed carefully. In particular, we show that the dominating equation has a phase transition. In the regime where the Dirac measure at zero is the only invariant probability measure, we prove exponential convergence to equilibrium both for the one-dimensional equation, and for the original nonlinear SDE. Similarly, propagation of chaos is shown by a componentwise sticky coupling and comparison with a system of one dimensional nonlinear SDEs with sticky boundaries at zero. The approach applies to equations without confinement potential and to interaction terms that are not of gradient type. 46 pages

    We prove that it is always possible to add some divergence free drift vector field to some two dimensional spherical Dirichlet problem, such that the resulting principal eigenvalue lies above a prescribed bound. By construction those drift vector fields vanish on the boundary and their flow lines individually stay away from the boundary. The capacity of those drift vector fields to accelerate diffusivity originates from high frequency oscillation of the associated flow lines. The lower bounds for the spectrum are obtained through isoperimetric inequalities for flow invariant functions.

    AbstractThe parameterization scheme that represents gravity waves due to convection in LMDz‐6A, the atmospheric components of the IPSL coupled climate model (IPSLCM6), is directly compared to Strateole‐2 balloon observations made in the lower tropical stratosphere from November 2019 to February 2020. The input meteorological fields necessary to run the parameterization offline are extracted from the ERA5 reanalysis and correspond to the instantaneous meteorological conditions found underneath the balloons. In general, we find a fair agreement between measurements of the momentum fluxes due to waves with periods less than 1 hr and the parameterization. The correlation of the daily values between the observations and the results of the parameterization is around 0.4, which is statistically elevated considering that we analyze around 600 days of data and surprisingly good considering that the parameterization has not been tuned: the scheme is just the standard one that helps producing a quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO) in the IPSLCM6 model. Online simulations also show that the measured values of momentum fluxes are well representative of the zonally and averaged values of momentum fluxes needed in LMDz‐6A to simulate a QBO. The observations also show that longer waves with periods smaller than a day carry about twice as much flux as waves with periods smaller than an hour, which is a challenge since the low period waves that make the difference are potentially in the “gray zone” of most climate models.

    Abstract The effect of magnetic field ripple on tokamak plasma without turbulence is studied numerically and augmented with a reduced analytical model that includes neoclassical processes in the presence of non-axisymmetric perturbation and stochastic transport. For this study, a magnetic field ripple perturbation has been implemented in the GYSELA gyrokinetic code. This implementation has been verified thanks to a test of toroidal angular momentum conservation. The GYSELA code was then successfully benchmarked against the NEO code, which solves the drift kinetic equation, and against the reduced model in the collisionality range ν ⋆ ∈ [0.05–0.5] for several amplitudes of the magnetic ripple. An observation, shared by the model, the NEO code and GYSELA simulations is that the thermal drive of the mean poloidal velocity—measured by the k V P coefficient—decreases sharply for large yet experimentally relevant magnetic ripple amplitudes, and may even change sign.
